Printmakers from the Margaret River Region Open Studios 2025 Leon Pericles AM is one of Australia’s most celebrated contemporary artists, known for his wit, imagination, and distinctive vision of the Australian landscape. Born in WA in 1949 to Greek and Anglo-Irish heritage, he grew up in Meekatharra before studying under Robert Juniper and completing postgraduate work in the UK. From the outset, Pericles mastered a wide range of media—painting, printmaking, sculpture, design, and even kitemaking—building a career defined by originality, breadth, and playfulness. A hallmark of his work is the fictional town of Widjimorphup, a satirical creation through which he explores the myths and spirit of the Australian bush. Widji has appeared in exhibitions across Australia and abroad, from playful performances to ambitious projects like The Tiggy Puggenheim Collection, a touring exhibition parodying the art world’s obsession with blockbusters. His work balances humour and critique while remaining rooted in a love of place. Over five decades, Pericles has exhibited widely, including retrospectives at the Art Gallery of WA and major print surveys curated by his wife and collaborator, Moira Pericles. His works are held in major public and private collections, with commissions ranging from large-scale canvases to stained glass windows. Printmaking remains central to his practice, celebrated for its technical brilliance and inventive spirit. As a patron of the Printmakers Association of Western Australia (PAWA), he continues to champion the medium. In 2023, his reputation as a leading Australian artist was affirmed with an invitation to exhibit at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna, Italy, and his appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Playful yet profound, Pericles continues to enchant audiences with satire, imagination, and a distinctly Australian spirit. 📸: Joshua Walters @leonpericles @margaretriverregionopenstudios @andrewthorntonhick @printinfocus @printcouncilofaustralia #leonpericles #printmaking #printmakers #mrros #margaretriver #openstudios (fb)
Printmakers from the Margaret River Region Open Studios 2025 Ian Mutch is a Western Australian artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, and installation. Born in Africa and now based in Dunsborough, his work explores the intersections of nature, narrative, and imagination, often layering abstract brushstrokes with whimsical characters, birds, trees, and fantastical worlds. Working across scales—from intimate works on paper to expansive murals—Mutch employs acrylics, aerosol, inks, and printmaking to create richly textured surfaces. His playful yet intricate style has won awards, enlivened public spaces, and featured in national and international publications. Recent large-scale commissions include works for Midland Train Station and Perth International Airport. Beyond his studio practice, Mutch co-founded and co-publishes Kingbrown Magazine and has spoken at Agideas Melbourne, the Design Institute of Australia, and Semi Permanent Sydney. Sandy Winkle is a multidisciplinary artist working across printmaking, painting, textiles, and photography from her bushland studio, the Sheila Shack, near Dunsborough. Her practice transforms recycled and natural materials into vibrant works, including handwoven baskets learned from Indigenous teachers in Kakadu, developed into distinctive forms with raffia, recycled silks, beads, and found objects. Alongside painting since her teens, Sandy incorporates handmade silk paper, eco-dyed textiles, and printmaking, exploring transformation and material storytelling. Sculpture and mosaics further extend her dialogue with nature, reuse, and imagination. Sandy is also an award-winning photographer; she was runner-up in the 2024 Australian Photographer of the Year (Aerial category). Whether through a print, basket, or photograph, Sandy’s work reflects her deep engagement with place, ecology, and the beauty of reinvention. 📸: Joshua Walters @ianmutch @wild_winkle_art @margaretriverregionopenstudios @andrewthorntonhick @printinfocus @printcouncilofaustralia #ianmutch #sandywinkle #printmaking #printmakers #mrros #margaretriver #openstudios (fb)
