Hepatitis Australia Inc
Hepatitis Australia Inc is a national nonprofit organisation dedicated to addressing the needs of individuals affected by viral hepatitis, particularly those with hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Incorporated in 1997, it serves as the peak community body for national actions in this area[1][3].
Mission and Objectives
The organisation's primary objective is to eliminate viral hepatitis in Australia by 2030[4]. To achieve this goal, Hepatitis Australia works closely with its member organisations, which include eight state and territory hepatitis organisations[1]. The group focuses on mobilizing national efforts to improve awareness, education, support services, and advocacy for those living with hepatitis[2].
Initiatives and Programs
Hepatitis Australia is involved in various initiatives to increase access to testing and treatment. The organisation has supported projects like the 50,000 Project, aimed at finding and treating individuals with hepatitis C[2]. Additionally, it advocates for increased funding and resources to support hepatitis elimination efforts, such as the recent federal budget allocation for hepatitis initiatives[2].
Hepatitis Australia also partners with other organisations to enhance support for people living with HIV and hepatitis B through research collaborations[2]. Furthermore, it provides resources translated into multiple languages to ensure inclusivity and accessibility across diverse communities[2].
Impact
Hepatitis Australia represents the interests of approximately 340,000 Australians living with hepatitis B or hepatitis C[3]. The organisation plays a crucial role in promoting awareness and advocating for the rights of this population. By supporting community-based services and national coordination, Hepatitis Australia contributes significantly to the national strategy for eliminating viral hepatitis[4].
