In a heartening show of community spirit, vet staff from the Tasmanian Veterinary Hospital volunteered their time today to support us by desexing 17 kittens in a single day 😳 The initiative by Rescue Cats Safe Haven in partnership with Dr Rob Callaway and the TVH team, comes at a critical time for us as we face increasing pressure on our resources from the sheer number of stray and surrendered kittens across Tasmania 😞 The offer from Dr Rob to host a dedicated desexing day has provided a much-needed lifeline…and to have a group of veterinary professionals donate their time—outside of their already demanding schedules—is nothing short of incredible. Their generosity will directly help us move kittens into adoptive homes more quickly and make space for more cats in need and we cannot thank them enough ❤️ We are now asking members of the community to support us by adopting, fostering or volunteering at our shelter in Penna, which is currently home to more than 100 cats. We can’t let these precious cats and kittens down, especially in their darkest hours. Our vet bills are hitting all time highs and the daily cost of caring for 131 cats and kittens in our shelter has drained us completely. The stress is becoming too much for us all. A number of our volunteers and foster carers have needed to take leave for their own mental health - it’s hard work physically but add to that the emotional drain experienced every day and it hits hard. This is rescue, these are the stories you don’t hear - the behind the closed doors experiences we have every day. It’s unrelenting. It mentally and physically drains you. We keep on going. For the animals. Always putting them first but the toll is huge on us all. We are a team of foster carers and volunteers often having to drop everything in order to rescue and provide care, whether it be Mother’s Day, an anniversary or a special occasion. Just in the last week we’ve had kittens at the emergency vet needing immediate life saving treatment leaving us with the stress of high bills that require on the spot payment. We have had 4 big dental surgeries, including one on a poor cat that was surrendered to us having never received any veterinary care for his 9 years of life, leaving him with dreadful dental issues causing excruciating pain. We’ve had xrays, blood tests, urine tests, and ongoing medical care to over 20 cats just this month. We are treating cat flu, bladder blockages, viral infections, skin infections, pneumonia … it just hasn't stopped. Tonight we need to desperately raise $17,000 to clear our vet bills. It is urgent.
