When Richard Barry OAM was conscripted into the Army in 1967, he didn’t ask about medals. Like many young men called up under the National Service scheme, he accepted his orders, trained in jungle warfare and served alongside regular soldiers in the chaos of Vietnam. “We did our lawful duty honourably,” he explains. “But unlike others, we were never fully recognised.” More than half a century later, Barry is the public face of a renewed campaign to correct what he and many others see as a deep injustice: the exclusion of around 2,500 Vietnam veterans from receiving the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. RSL NSW has publicly backed this member-led campaign and is using Vietnam Veterans’ Day to call on the government to act without delay. “This is a matter of equity, fairness and justice,” says RSL NSW State Secretary Jeff O'Brien. “The government must act.” Catch the full article on the RSL NSW website: https://rslnsw.org.au/news/seeking-justice-for-vietnam-nashos/ (fb)
On Vietnam Veterans’ Day (18 August), RSL NSW honours the service and sacrifice of those who served during Australia’s decade-long involvement in the Vietnam War. Over 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam from 1962 to 1973, of those who served, 523 died and around 3,000 were evacuated with wounds, injuries or illnesses. RSL NSW invites the community to join us in recognising all who served, and in remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
