Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand Inc
The Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand Inc, commonly abbreviated as EIANZ, is a not-for-profit, professional association that supports environmental practitioners across Australia and New Zealand. It is recognized as Australasia's leading body for environmental professionals, providing support to practitioners at all stages of their careers, from students and early-career individuals to experienced and certified professionals[2][4].
History and Structure
The EIANZ was established by and for its members, with the goal of fostering a community of professional environmental practitioners. The organization has Australian divisions and a New Zealand chapter, ensuring a broad coverage across both countries[1][3]. Over the years, the Institute has played a pivotal role in the development of professional standards and certification programs for environmental practitioners.
Special Interest Sections
The EIANZ encompasses several special interest sections that focus on various environmental disciplines:
- Climate Change: Focused on addressing climate change impacts and mitigation strategies.
- Heritage: Concerned with the conservation and management of cultural and natural heritage sites.
- Ecology: Examines ecological systems and principles in environmental management.
- Impact Assessment: Involves the evaluation of environmental impacts of projects and policies.
- Environmental Accounting: Focuses on integrating environmental considerations into financial and economic decisions.
- Contaminated Land: Addresses issues related to land pollution and remediation.
- Communities of Practice: These are groups of members with shared interests who collaborate on projects and share knowledge[1].
Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP) Scheme
One of the significant contributions of the EIANZ is the development of the Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP) scheme, which was officially launched in November 2004. This certification program aims to recognize the expertise of environmental practitioners, ensuring they meet high professional standards and ethical codes[3].
Membership and Recognition
The EIANZ offers membership categories that cater to various levels of experience and expertise. Members can benefit from professional indemnity insurance, access to events, publications, and networking opportunities within the environmental sector[1]. The organization is also recognized internationally; it has been a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since January 1993, classified as a National NGO[5].
Ethical Standards and Governance
The EIANZ operates under a strict Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, ensuring that its members adhere to high ethical standards in their professional practice. The organization's governance structure includes various corporate and governance mechanisms, as well as partnerships with relevant stakeholders in the environmental sector[1].
Conclusion
The Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand Inc plays a crucial role in shaping the environment sector across both countries by providing professional development opportunities, promoting ethical practices, and advocating for environmental conservation. Its commitment to supporting environmental practitioners has made it a valuable resource in the field of environmental management and conservation.

Following our latest keynote speaker spotlights, we are thrilled to announce our final keynote speaker for the EIANZ 2025 Annual Conference, Professor Fiona Wood AO, FRCS, FRACS! Professor Fiona Wood AO, FRCS, FRACS is an internationally recognised burns surgeon, researcher, and innovator with more than three decades of experience. She is Director of the Burns Service of Western Australia, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Fiona Stanley Hospital and Perth Children’s Hospital, Winthrop Professor in the School of Surgery at The University of Western Australia, and co-founder of the Fiona Wood Foundation. Fiona is best known for co-inventing the groundbreaking "spray-on skin" cell technology (ReCell), which has transformed the treatment and recovery of burn patients worldwide. She came to prominence leading the medical response to the 2002 Bali bombings, saving many lives and advancing the future of trauma care. Her contributions have been recognised through numerous honours, including Australian of the Year (2005), the Australian Society for Medical Research Medal (2022), and induction into the WA Science Hall of Fame (2024) and received an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2024. Fiona will share her experiences working in emerging professional environments that, whilst unfamiliar to EIANZ members, offer valuable parallels and insights applicable to our field. She will dive into how she has led and worked in successful collaborative teams as a leading burns surgeon and researcher over the past 30 years. Most importantly, she will share examples of times when collaboration has not worked or been the approach to deliver the expected outcomes, and how these challenges were mitigated. 🔗Register for the 2025 Annual Conference: https://www.eianz.org/events/event/eianz-2025-annual-conference-environmental-excellence-through-collaboration (fb)
