POV: It’s our 50th anniversary, and we’re revisiting our history. 📍 It was 1975. A group of compassionate Australians gathered in the living room of Don and Mary Whitelum’s home, united by a shared purpose. To respond to the Indo-Chinese refugee crisis! Their mission? To welcome refugees, support their resettlement, and help them rebuild their lives in Australia. What they didn’t yet realise is that this small meeting would spark a national movement, one that will go on to change thousands of lives for generations. By November 1975, their vision became a reality. The Indo-China Refugee Association (ICRA) was officially established, a non-political, non-sectarian organisation committed to supporting refugees. This is where it all began. 💙 . . . . . . #50YearsOfARA #ARA50Years #RefugeeSupport #HumanitarianHistory #WelcomingRefugees #ARAAnniversary #CommunityImpact (fb)
Sharing stills from the official Launch of the Ending Coercive Control, Family & Domestic Violence Conference, which Namam, our Client Services Manager, presented at on May 7th. Namam participated in a panel discussion focused on trauma-informed approaches for empowering and supporting vulnerable and at-risk communities. During the session, she addressed what coercive control and abuse look like within migrant and refugee communities, emphasising how they differ from other populations. She also discussed the key barriers and stigmas these communities face and highlighted the work that ARA is doing to address these challenges. We’re incredibly proud of Namam for her insightful contribution and strong advocacy on such a crucial matter. Her voice reflects ARA’s ongoing commitment to empowering migrant and refugee communities and driving meaningful, trauma-informed change. . . . #CoerciveControl #FamilyViolence #DomesticViolenceAwareness #TraumaInformedCare #RefugeeSupport #MigrantVoices #InclusionMatters #CulturalSafety #CommunityEmpowerment #EndDV #HumanRights #ARAAustralia (fb)
