Meals On Wheels Australia Limited is a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to providing nutritious meal delivery services to individuals who are unable to prepare or obtain meals themselves, primarily catering to older and vulnerable Australians. Established as a national association in 1989, it represents and supports a network of more than 590 grassroots member services spanning every Australian state and territory, all committed to promoting the wellbeing, independence, and social connection of their clients[2].

History

The concept of Meals on Wheels originated in Britain during World War II, aiming to assist frail older people to remain in their homes by delivering meals. In Australia, the first Meals on Wheels service began in 1953 in South Melbourne, where Mrs. E. Watts delivered meals by tricycle. The initial meal included soup, roast lamb, and plum pudding, costing around 13 cents[3]. Shortly after, in South Australia, Meals on Wheels was founded in 1953 by Doris Taylor MBE, with the first meal served from the Port Adelaide kitchen in 1954[1][3]. Similarly, in New South Wales, the program started in 1957 by the Sydney City Council, initially serving 150 meals per week cooked in the Town Hall kitchen[1].

Over the decades, Meals On Wheels Australia Limited evolved into a federated national association, officially formed in 1989, to support its member organizations, provide a unified voice to government, and advocate for the nutritional and social needs of older Australians[2]. Despite challenges such as volunteer shortages and increased regulation, the service continues to thrive, delivering over 10 million meals annually to more than 75,000 recipients across urban, regional, and rural Australia with the help of approximately 76,000 volunteers[3].

Mission and Services

Meals On Wheels Australia Limited focuses on more than meal delivery; it champions the importance of good nutrition and social connection for older and vulnerable people. The organization works collaboratively with its member services, peak bodies, and other providers to raise awareness and lobby for policies that enhance the quality of life and health outcomes for its clients[2]. Membership provides services with access to resources, advocacy support, and a platform to influence federal policy relevant to meal delivery and aged care services.

The meals provided are designed to meet diverse dietary needs and preferences, supporting recipients’ independence and confidence while addressing food insecurity and improving overall diet quality. The service also has broader societal benefits by reducing reliance on hospitals, nursing homes, and other high-cost care facilities[1].

Organizational Structure

Meals On Wheels Australia Limited operates as a national federation supporting numerous localized member organizations. Each member service operates within its state or territory, catering to community-specific needs while benefiting from the national body’s advocacy and support functions. This federated model enhances coordination across Australia and strengthens the sector's collective voice[2].

Recognition

The Queensland branch of Meals on Wheels was honored with the Queensland Greats Award in 2012, reflecting the organization’s longstanding impact and importance within Australian communities[1].
