Australian Design Centre
The Australian Design Centre (ADC) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion and support of contemporary craft and design practice in Australia. Located in Sydney on Gadigal Land, the ADC plays a pivotal role in amplifying and strengthening the visibility and impact of Australian designers and craft artists.
History and Overview
Originally known as Object: Australian Design Centre, the organisation has a long-established history as a key promoter of contemporary design. It formerly operated from a gallery space at the redeveloped St. Margaret's Hospital site in Surry Hills, Sydney, before relocating to William House in Darlinghurst, New South Wales. The ADC is a member of the Australian Craft and Design Centres (ACDC), the peak national body representing the professional craft and design sectors across Australia[2][5].
Activities and Programs
The Centre facilitates a wide range of activities including exhibitions, workshops, and awards that foster the development of craft and design. It hosts approximately 18 exhibitions annually, showcasing a diverse array of contemporary design practices. ADC is particularly noted for its support of early career designers, providing platforms for emerging talent to gain exposure and recognition[3][4].
Publications
ADC has published Object Magazine, a periodical dedicated to contemporary craft and design. The magazine evolved from the Crafts NSW Newsletter and ran in print for 59 issues until 2009. Since 2011, Object Magazine has been released in a digital format, available as an iPad app and online, garnering international acclaim and multiple awards for its innovative digital design and content[5].
Notable Exhibitions and Programs
The Centre has been home to numerous landmark exhibitions that have increased the profile of Australian designers, including retrospectives of Dinosaur Designs and Akira Isogawa, the launch of the Living Treasures program in 2005, and thematic exhibitions like Menagerie: Contemporary Indigenous Sculpture (2009) and Hyperclay: Contemporary Ceramics (2011)[5].
Partnerships and Support
The Australian Design Centre is supported by government bodies including the New South Wales Government, City of Sydney, and the Australian Government, reflecting its role as a vital cultural institution in the Australian design landscape[1].
Australian Design Centre continues to serve as a dynamic platform dedicated to celebrating and advancing the craft and design community, nurturing creativity, and facilitating cultural exchange within Australia and internationally.

✨ Congratulations to Roseanne Bartley, recipient of the Highly Commended Award in the 2025 MAKE Award: Biennial Prize for Innovation in Australian Craft and Design Roseanne is recognised for her work A Poetry of Rings: The Mulga Alphabet, which deepens her long exploration into language, form and the body. In this piece, she hand-carves a series of finger rings from Mulga wood (Acacia aneura), a material rich with cultural significance for First Nations Peoples and layered with histories of settlement. Through these carved forms, Roseanne invites us to see jewellery as both language and gesture. As a means of communication that is intimate, embodied and deeply connected to place. The work reflects her interest in the roots of language and adornment as sensory systems of meaning shaped by memory and experience. A leading artist-jeweller based in Naarm/Melbourne, Roseanne’s practice spans wearable artefacts, participatory projects and installation works that use jewellery to foster connection and reflection. See A Poetry of Rings: The Mulga Alphabet as part of the MAKE Award exhibition, now showing at the Australian Design Centre through 19 November. #MAKEAward2025 #AustralianDesignCentre #RoseanneBartley #ContemporaryJewellery #AustralianCraft #MaterialInnovation #ArtJewellery #ContemporaryDesign #CraftExhibition #InnovationInDesign #MeetTheMaker #SydneyDesign #CreativeAustralia (fb)
In The Studio with Kate Shanahan For the next episode in our In the Studio series for AusArt Giving Day, we met Sydney designer Kate Shanahan, the maker behind Designed by Kate. Kate handcrafts beautiful, one-of-a-kind bags from rescued materials including old oil paintings, leather offcuts and collected fabrics. Her love of upcycling and construction began in theatre, where she learned to create imaginative pieces from found materials, discovering how resourcefulness and creativity can turn the ordinary into something extraordinary. In this video, Kate answers the question “Why does art matter?” with a heartfelt story about her son, who uses art as a therapeutic outlet. She reminds us that as humans, we all need space to create and express ourselves, a truth that Australian Design Centre proudly champions. Through your support this AusArt Giving Day, ADC can continue to create a platform for artists like Kate to share their stories, inspire others, and nurture the next generation of makers and designers. 📅 AusArt Giving Day 23 October 🔗 Learn more and donate via the link in bio #AusArtDay #InTheStudio #AustralianDesignCentre #DesignedByKate #KateShanahan #UpcycledDesign #HandcraftedBags #MeetTheMaker #SustainableDesign #SupportLocalMakers #FutureMakers #ContemporaryCraft #AustralianDesign Video by Rueben Davis and Josh Lawrence @sixto.studio (fb)
