The Australian Crohn's & Colitis Association (ACCA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people living with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, across Australia. Established over 40 years ago, ACCA provides resources, advice, and encouragement aimed at empowering individuals affected by these chronic conditions to live fearlessly and improve their quality of life.
History and Purpose
ACCA has a longstanding history, having served the Australian community for more than four decades. Its primary mission is to provide a comprehensive support network for the estimated 180,000 Australians living with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Beyond support services, the organization actively funds and promotes research projects to better understand and treat IBD.
Activities and Programs
The association operates various initiatives to assist those with IBD:
- Support Services: ACCA offers helpline calls and NurseLine assessments to provide direct advice and emotional support to patients.
- Research Funding: ACCA has invested over $650,000 in research grants aimed at advancing clinical understanding and treatment options for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
- Community Engagement: The organization supports numerous local support groups and facilitates connections among people living with IBD.
- Youth Programs: Dedicated programs focus on young people with Crohn's and colitis, addressing their specific needs.
- Clinical Studies: ACCA promotes participation in clinical research studies such as SWIFT and Palekona to contribute to the development of improved therapies.
Membership and Governance
With a membership base exceeding 2,450 Australians, the association encourages those affected and their families to join its community for educational resources, advocacy, and peer support. Governed as a registered charity under Australian law, ACCA complies with regulatory standards, including transparent financial reporting and accountability.
Impact
The Australian Crohn's & Colitis Association continues to be a vital resource and advocate for people living with IBD in Australia, combining grassroots support with active involvement in medical research. Its efforts have established it as a central institution in improving the lives of those affected by Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis nationwide.
Note: The organization is registered with the Australian Business Number (ABN) 42082747135RR0001.
