Another of the beautiful Honour Boards in our collection, and perhaps the most portable. The 2/12th was formed in late 1939. 2/5 of the members from Tasmania and the remainder from North Queensland. They were assigned to the 18th Brigade. The Australian War Memorial lists their 'Events' as Battles of Buna, Milne Bay, the Defences of Tobruk & Shaggy Ridge Operations. Their Battle Honours include: Balikpapan, Borneo 1945, Goodenough Island, Tobruk defence, Sanananda Road, Salient 1941. The board is displayed in Gallery 2 of the Museum. (fb)
The Museum loves a hand-drawn map marked 'Secret'! This trail map was part of a plan for a 'Jungle March' by the 17 Aust Fd Regt. in Dec 1942. It involved manual hauling a 18pr MkIV gun & a 2pr A/Tk gun from Olera Creek, uphill to Paluma (approx. 9 miles) & lots of cane knives & axes. It took 9 days to cut through the rainforest, 6 of which were incessantly wet. Rate of march uphill was 150 yards per hour. The terrain was described as "...generally typical of parts of NEW GUINEA" The trail is now not so secret, & is used by bushwalking groups. (fb)

About Us HISTORY Jezzine Barracks has been home to Australian military units for over 120 years and is now a fitting home to showcase the Museum and its extensive Collection of the history of the Army in North Queensland The earliest history of the Army in North Queensland can be traced back to the early 1880s when volunteer Independent Rifle Companies were formed at towns throughout the northern region. On October 30 1886 the 3rd Queensland or Kennedy Regiment was gazetted and based at Kissing Point Townsville with Major William Slade Vincent as its first commanding officer.
