Haemophilia Foundation Western Australia Inc.
The Haemophilia Foundation Western Australia Inc. (HFWA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for people affected by bleeding disorders in Western Australia. Established as a community-based foundation, it provides support, advocacy, information, and education for individuals with haemophilia, von Willebrand disorder, and other bleeding conditions, as well as their families.
Objectives and Activities
HFWA works towards enhancing the well-being of people with bleeding disorders by engaging in various activities:
- Offering peer support programs and community activities to create a supportive environment.
- Providing accurate and up-to-date information about bleeding disorders to members and the wider public.
- Advocating on behalf of the bleeding disorders community by liaising with government agencies, hospitals, and health services.
- Assisting members with educational and welfare needs through direct support.
- Supporting research initiatives aimed at developing new and improved therapies for bleeding disorders.
- Promoting blood donation to support treatment efforts via the Australian Red Cross Blood Service[3].
Governance
HFWA is governed by a volunteer-based council that represents the interests of Western Australian members within the broader framework of Haemophilia Foundation Australia, the national body coordinating efforts across states and territories. The council participates in national meetings to align strategies and policies to best serve the community. The current president of HFWA is Gavin Finkelstein, who has been actively involved in the organization since 1995 and brings personal experience living with haemophilia to his leadership role[5].
Community Impact
The HFWA focuses on empowering individuals with bleeding disorders, including specific attention to women and girls affected by such conditions. It provides resources related to bleeding disorder testing, self-advocacy, and management, facilitating greater awareness and self-care among its members. The foundation also organizes events and local support groups to foster community connections and mutual assistance[1].
Affiliation
As part of the network of state and territory haemophilia foundations, HFWA collaborates closely with Haemophilia Foundation Australia, which serves as the national voice for those living with inherited bleeding disorders across the country. Together, they promote education, advocacy, and research to improve outcomes and quality of life for the bleeding disorders community nationwide[2].
Haemophilia Foundation Western Australia Inc. remains a vital resource in the region, committed to serving the needs of people living with bleeding disorders through support, education, and advocacy.

Do you find yourself irritable, a bit short with people, easily upset, regularly frustrated, sometimes tearful, tired, unable to enjoy life like you used to? You may be needing to do some deliberate self-care. Kathryn Body shares how you can maintain your happiness, physical health, and mental health through a few simple lifestyle changes. Because taking care of yourself doesn’t mean “me first” – it means “me, too.” https://tinyurl.com/hfa-takingcareofyourself #womenshealthweek #bekindtoyourmind (fb)
#TrueorFalse - More men than women have VWD? 🤔 The answer is: FALSE. It is a common misconception that women don’t have bleeding disorders, due to how haemophilia is linked to the X-chromosome. However, von Willebrand disease is not sex-linked. It is inherited by males and females in equal numbers. In fact, women and girls with VWD are more likely to show symptoms than men and boys because they can have problems with heavy menstrual bleeding and may have bleeding problems after childbirth. For stories about women and girls with bleeding disorders and the challenges they have overcome, visit our website: https://tinyurl.com/women-with-bleeding-disorders #WomensHealthWeek (fb)
