ARAFMI Ltd
Overview
ARAFMI Ltd is a not-for-profit organisation based in Queensland, Australia. It was established out of a need to provide support for mental health carers, aligning with the broader ARAFMI movement that began in the mid-1970s. The acronym originally stood for Association of Relatives And Friends of the Mentally Ill.
History
The ARAFMI movement in Australia dates back to 1975, starting with a first group formed in Sydney by relatives and friends of individuals with mental health issues. This initiative quickly expanded across states and territories, with ARAFMI becoming a primary source of support for mental health carers nationwide. In Queensland, ARAFMI's roots similarly began in the mid-1970s, initially focusing on carer support groups and gradually expanding its services.
Mission and Services
ARAFMI's mission is to provide quality support and education services to individuals with mental health needs, their families, and carers. The organisation offers a range of support services including:
- 24-hour Carer Support Line: Providing constant availability for carers who need someone to talk to.
- NDIS Support Services: Assistance with daily living, transport, consumables, support coordination, and community participation.
- Support Coordination: Helping to manage and coordinate various supports from different providers to ensure seamless care.
- Specialist Support Coordination: Offering more specialized support for complex needs.
Values
ARAFMI operates based on a set of core values:
- Respect: Understanding the impact of words and actions.
- Diligence: Working hard to help carers and clients achieve their goals.
- Service: Being of assistance by understanding needs and wants.
- Compassion: Empathizing with others.
- Integrity: Maintaining commitments.
Impact
ARAFMI's contributions align with the broader Mental Health Carers Australia movement, which has grown to represent and advocate for the needs of mental health carers across Australia. With approximately 240,000 Australians providing unpaid care for individuals with mental illness, the value of such services is substantial, contributing to both carer well-being and the broader mental health landscape.
