According to the WHO, 3-year-olds should engage in at least 180 minutes of physical activity daily, with 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity. But how about the children around you? Are they reaching that goal? In Ms. Vichet’s class, physical activity is a priority. She starts the day with simple exercises, and is excellent at incorporating full-body movement and games that keep the kids active. With more children spending time on smartphones and screens, there’s growing concern that their physical activity is decreasing, while their screen time, bedtimes, and wake-up times are all shifting. In today’s world, it’s clear that both adults and children need to intentionally make time for movement. In preschools, it’s essential that children not only have free play during breaks but also participate in structured activities that build strength and motor skills. In Ms. Pheaksalay’s class, the children are exploring the Khmer consonant "ដ" (daw, similar to a hard “d” sound). The teacher asks, “Can you think of any words that use the sound ‘ដ’?” The kids eagerly respond with words like ដំរី (dɔm-riː, elephant), ដូង (doːŋ, coconut), and ដៃ (daj, hand). Each of these words begins with "ដ", helping the students connect the sound to its written form. In the photo, you can see one of the children in the front of the class circling the letter "ដ" in words. Afterward, the children practice distinguishing "ដ" from other similar consonants, strengthening their letter recognition. At a recent meeting in Kandieng district, teachers demonstrated this approach in a mock lesson. We also shared fun ideas to make learning even more engaging, like air-writing the letter or using their bodies to form its shape. Since many teachers feel they must strictly follow the standard flow of the lesson, we hope that by gently introducing new materials and approaches, they will begin to explore more freely and think, “Maybe I’ll try this in my lesson.” Ultimately, we’d love to see an environment where teachers feel comfortable and confident coming up with creative ideas for their own classrooms. To wrap up the lesson, we introduced TUKTUK’s "Elephant Song" and "Counting Down Coconut Song" to reinforce the vocabulary.
