Wheelchairs For Kids Australia Ltd
Wheelchairs For Kids Australia Ltd is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing wheelchairs and enhancing the mobility of children worldwide. Founded by the Rotary Club of Scarborough, Western Australia, with support from the Christian Brothers, the organization's mission is to improve the lives of disabled and disadvantaged children by providing them with mobility aids, free of charge.
History
The project was initiated in 1998 with an innovative approach using old bike frames and a wooden base for the early wheelchair prototypes. Over the years, the design has undergone significant transformations, resulting in a world-class model that meets World Health Organisation standards. The latest design is fully adjustable, allowing it to accommodate children as they grow and is designed to handle rough terrain with features such as solid puncture-proof tires and a single front wheel. This makes it easier for children to navigate challenging environments[5].
Mission and Impact
Wheelchairs For Kids Australia Ltd is committed to addressing the global issue of inaccessible mobility equipment for children. It is estimated that there are over 10 million children worldwide who cannot access wheelchairs due to economic constraints or underdeveloped medical services. The organization plays a crucial role in providing these children with wheelchairs that not only enhance their mobility but also contribute to better health outcomes, increased educational opportunities, and enhanced social connections[1].
Operations
The organization is entirely volunteer-based, relying on contributions and donations to continue its mission. The wheelchairs are manufactured in a dedicated factory in Wangara, Perth, with the assistance of volunteers and support from partners like the University of Western Australia's Engineering Department, which provides testing equipment to ensure the strength and durability of the wheelchairs[5].
Recognition and Awards
Thomas Oliver Pickett AM, Co-Founder of Wheelchairs For Kids Australia and Volunteer Factory Manager, was recognized as the 2025 Senior Australian of the Year. This honor acknowledges his 26 years of dedicated service and the profound impact of the organization in bringing mobility and dignity to countless children worldwide[1].
Financial and Legal Status
Wheelchairs For Kids Australia Ltd is registered as a charity and is endorsed by the Australian Tax Office as a deductible gift recipient[5]. The organization's operations are supported through donations and fundraising efforts.
Key Statistics
- Number of Wheelchairs Distributed: Over 60,000 wheelchairs have been provided to children in more than 80 countries.
- Volunteers: The organization relies on over 250 regular volunteers for its operations[1].
- Manufacturing and Distribution: Wheelchairs are designed to meet WHO specifications for strength and durability, suitable for rough terrain and adjustable for children of different sizes[4].

#volunteeringwa Last night we were thrilled to join Volunteering WA at the 2025 WA Volunteer of the Year Awards. Our living legend Br Olly was up for a Lifetime Achievement Award. It wasn't Olly's night this time, but huge congrats to Colin Longworth from Living Proud WA - a more than worth winner 🩷 (as were all the winners, finalists and nominees). What would the community be without all the selfless people who give their time and talent to making our world a better place. 💛 Our CEO Greg was also pleased to host some of our other long-term legends at the gala event - Darcy and his wife, John (in his 90s) and wife Nanette who are both still coming in every week and of course the "originals"–Beppie and Olly. We are looking forward to National Volunteer Week starting Monday to celebrate all our amazing team 🙏🙏 Volunteering Australia #volunteering #volunteerappreciation #WheelchairsForKids (fb)
Today we received a beautiful email and photos to share from Br George Massay CFC, Christian Brothers, Nairobi, Kenya. Br George was visiting Haydom in the Manyara Region of Tanzania when he spied a Wheelchairs For Kids Australia wheelchair ☺️💛 "I witnessed children moving freely and confidently—mobility that is visibly transforming their lives and those of their families. Thanks to these wheelchairs, many of the children can now attend school, make friends, and participate more fully in everyday life." Enjoy these wonderful photos and read on for Br George's News From Haydom ... Haydom is a remote village in northern Tanzania, home to Haydom Hospital—a referral hospital originally established by Lutheran Missionaries from Norway to serve the surrounding low-income communities. While visiting the hospital for family reasons, I noticed a familiar-looking wheelchair being pushed—with a child joyfully on board. Like Moses drawn to the burning bush, I felt compelled to take a closer look. To my surprise and delight, it was one of the wheelchairs from Wheelchairs For Kids Australia —a remarkable project founded Scarborough Rotary together with Brother Olly Picket AM and supported by and the Christian Brothers in Perth. Twice a year, Haydom Hospital brings together children with disabilities and their parents for support and training. Many of these children live with conditions such as spina bifida and hydrocephalus. By fortunate coincidence, my visit aligned with one of these gatherings. I witnessed children moving freely and confidently—mobility that is visibly transforming their lives and those of their families. When I introduced myself as a Christian Brother who knows Brother Olly and showed photos of him and his team at their workshop in Perth, the parents and Doctors welcomed me warmly. They invited me to take photos and send them back to Wheelchairs For Kids Australia. Some even demonstrated how their children are now able to navigate various challenges with the help of their new wheelchairs. They had a racing field in which various obstacles were placed and children had to navigate those obstacles with their wheelchairs. Some looked proficient, almost athletic. It was deeply moving to see the joy on the children’s faces and to hear the heartfelt gratitude from their parents. Thanks to these wheelchairs, many of the children can now attend school, make friends, and participate more fully in everyday life. Br George Massay Br George you made our day - we thank you and every involved this project in Haydom. #WheelchairsForKids #Haydom #tanzania #MobilityMatters (fb)
