𝗠𝘂𝗱𝗷𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗮 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝟮 🐠🪸 Our team returned to Mudjimba (Old Woman) Island to survey Site 2 - the shallower of the Mudjimba sites we monitor each year. Despite the chilly water, we were treated to a crystal-clear day both above and below the surface, with sunshine, a brisk breeze, and plenty of curious marine life. This site continues to show strong signs of reef health, with thriving hard coral colonies and a diversity of nudibranchs adding colour to the reefscape. While we did observe a small amount of bleaching and some algae overgrowth, overall the reef remains in good condition. A number of broken corals were also recorded -something we’ll continue to keep an eye on, especially since marker buoys are in place to reduce anchor damage in the area. One highlight? The turtles. Dozens of them cruised through the shallows, as inquisitive as ever, weaving between surveyors and surfacing nearby with no concern for our presence. These interactions are a beautiful reminder of why ongoing monitoring matters - protecting the habitats that sustain such iconic species. It was a stunning day on the water, with a full boat of ocean lovers eager to learn more and lend a hand. These surveys aren’t just about data; they’re about connection, inspiration, and building the community that will continue to protect our reefs. A huge thanks to @Bluetortugaadventures for getting us safely to site, and to the volunteers who make this work possible. 𝗠𝘂𝗱𝗷𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗮 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝟭 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 🐠🪸 Last month our team headed out to survey and train another surveyor at Mudjimba Island - and what a day it was! We were welcomed with one of the clearest visibility days we’ve seen in years (though the water was definitely chilly). Beneath the surface, the reef was buzzing with life. We spotted healthy corals, vibrant anemones, plenty of cowrie shells, curious turtles, and even the tiniest wobbegong shark we’ve ever seen, perfectly tucked into a coral patch. As always, our surveys help us check on reef health. While we did find some fishing debris, it was heartening to see how resilient this reef remains. This trip was also a special training day for one of our local volunteers, building skills as part of our Reef Health Survey program. A big thanks to Blue Tortuga Adventures for getting us safely to site, and to the full boat of keen ocean lovers who joined us on a beautiful sunny day. It’s always inspiring to see so much community interest in protecting our local reefs.
