Email BOS at: contact@orangutans.com.au or phone us on: (02) 9011 5455 Funds supported the rescue, temporary housing and resettlement of Borneo Orangutans back in the wild (where it is feasible). After releasing Orangutans into natural rainforest land, their movements are tracked to ensure the release into the wild is successful. We have helped the release of nearly 500 Orangutans into the wild since 2012. Where release back into the wild isn't possible (this includes over 200 Orangutans who have been designated as unreleasable for various health reasons) we invest in the improvement of the animal's captive environment including sanitation and enrichment programs. Our VicePresident Lou Grossfeldt has been active in this area and has travelled to Borneo with Australia volunteers to provide hands on assistance. We have also sent Australian volunteers to help maintain facilities for these Orangutans. We currently care for more than 400 orangutans and manage over 1.1 million acres of forest. During 2020, 2021 and 2022, due to the impact of COVID19 a number of planned projects had to be deferred. In 202122 funds were used on capital and maintenance works for the rehabilitation centres including maintaining solar panels and batteries to improve reliability of electricity, rain water capture and recycling, and food storage. Funds were also used to support reforestation of areas burnt in Samboja Lestari and in Mawas.
