The Michael Manion Wool Industry Foundation
The Michael Manion Wool Industry Foundation (MMWIF) is an Australian nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting rural families and children in need, particularly those connected to the wool industry. Established in 2015, the foundation acts as a reach-out support service that provides assistance to individuals facing hardship due to illness, accidents, or other difficulties common in rural communities.
History and Background
The foundation was established in memory of Michael Manion, a prominent figure in the Australian wool industry known for his gregarious nature and deep empathy for people. Nicknamed "The Legg," Manion was passionate about the wool industry and dedicated much of his life to mentoring and supporting young people within the trade. He passed away on 27 July 2014 at the age of 61 after a short battle with cancer.
Inspired by his legacy, colleagues, peers, and friends founded the Michael Manion Wool Industry Foundation to continue his mission of helping and supporting those involved in the wool and broader agricultural industries.
Mission and Activities
The foundation raises funds primarily within the wool industry but also welcomes support from the wider farming and agricultural community. Proceeds from its fundraising events and donations are allocated to provide financial and emotional support to rural families and children who are experiencing hardship.
MMWIF is active in:
-
Organizing annual fundraising events within the wool industry.
-
Offering direct assistance to rural families facing medical, financial, or other crises.
-
Promoting awareness and encouraging community support for rural welfare.
Governance and Community Involvement
The foundation is overseen by a board of directors comprising experienced individuals committed to supporting rural communities. Members include figures such as Samantha Wan, who has publicly shared her involvement on the board.
MMWIF encourages community engagement through donations, fundraising ideas, and initiatives aimed at expanding its impact within and beyond the wool industry.
Legacy of Michael Manion
Michael Manion was the founding member and managing director of Segard Masurel (Australia) Pty Ltd in Melbourne from 1999 until his passing. His dedication to the wool industry and the people within it left a lasting impression that the foundation honors through its ongoing support programs.
By continuing to champion rural families in need, the Michael Manion Wool Industry Foundation upholds the spirit of its namesake, ensuring his commitment to the wool industry and rural communities endures.

MMWIF to the rescue again!! We were recently contacted by our wonderful friends at Country Hope, Wagga NSW who had two families with sick children and no reliable vehicles to ensure safe commute to and from the medical care that is required. MMWIF donated to both families and amount that was matched by Country Hope to get both mums in new cars. We wish both families all the best in the recovery for their children. Happy travels in the meantime 🤞🤞🤞🤞👩👧👦👩👧👦 (fb)
In Western Australia we'd like to thank both Scanlan Wool - Western Australia and the team from @Spearwood Wool (Liam Basire) for their generosity in offering two bales each of merino fleece wool that collectively raised over $4000 for our foundation. Thank you also to the buyers who purchased these lots also. Melbourne is gearing up for their annual sale in two weeks' time. Remember, if you know a 'rural' family or individual in need then be sure to let us know to see where we can possible help. (fb)
