Home

Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) is an independent organisation committed to the treatment or prevention of birth defects and childhood disease. Making the incurable, curable. 1 in 20 kids face a birth defect or genetic disease. Our Jeans for Genes campaign helps our scientists at Children's Medical Research Institute find treatments and cures, so kids can just be kids. During the year, the principal activity of the Institute continued to be conducting research into the causes, prevention, relief and cure of disease and illness in children. Our core research activities include genetics and gene therapy, embryology, neuroscience and cancer research. The Institute operates as a Notforprofit entity. Income to support this principal activity is derived from many activities including applications for grants from various sources, from public fundraising campaigns and events, and from an endowment fund in the Institute s name, managed to achieve investment returns with acceptable risk. To achieve the Institute's objectives, the following strategies have been adopted: 1. recruitment of specialist staff across its core research activities; 2. grow complementary labs, technology facilities and expansion of big data capabilities; 3. diversification and strengthening of its fundraising activities; 4. exploiting industry collaborations for commercialisation opportunities to bridge funding gaps and generate new, longterm revenue streams; and 5. effective management of its Endowment Funds to achieve appropriate returns with acceptable risk.

Popis

Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) is an Australian nonprofit medical research organization dedicated to understanding and developing treatments for serious genetic diseases affecting children. Located in Westmead, New South Wales, CMRI is known for its focus on pediatric genetic conditions, aiming to find cures for previously incurable diseases that impact young patients.

Overview

CMRI operates as an independent research institute, employing over 200 scientists who conduct advanced biomedical research primarily on genetic disorders in children. Their work encompasses stem cell medicine, drug screening, eye genetics, and other pioneering fields to improve the health outcomes of affected children and future generations.

Research Focus

The institute's research addresses the approximately one in twenty children born with a birth defect or genetic disease. CMRI's programs include:

  • Stem cell research and regenerative medicine
  • Genetic analysis and discovery of disease mechanisms
  • Development of drug screening platforms to identify potential treatments
  • Specialized studies on eye genetics and associated disorders

This multidisciplinary approach allows CMRI to target the root causes of genetic diseases and work towards effective therapies and cures.

Contributions

CMRI has contributed to scientific knowledge and clinical genetics by submitting genetic findings and data to public repositories such as ClinVar, supporting global efforts in genetic disease diagnosis and treatment.

Mission and Impact

The institute’s mission is to transform the lives of children affected by genetic diseases through innovative research. Their commitment is reflected in outreach and fundraising campaigns like Jeans for Genes, which raise awareness and support for ongoing research endeavors.

CMRI continues to be a leading force in pediatric genetic research in Australia, dedicated to improving the health and futures of children affected by genetic conditions through scientific discovery and collaboration.
