LILYDALE’S HEART NEEDS A BYPASS ( coined by Cr Smith & Cr Hogget June 2001 ) Moves to establish a bypass of Lilydale’s Main Street began in the 1950s when retailers wanted their unusually tree lined wide Main Street kept. However, increased development in the 1960s led to the Lilydale Shire Council to widen the street and build it on three existing north - south levels we have today. By the late 1970s the traders and businesses realised if Lilydale Main Street was to prosper a Bypass was needed. Despite their best efforts every time agreement was reached with council and the State Government, nothing happened. Now we are in 2025. If their is an accident or unseasonal weather events or fire you can be stuck in gridlock. Dare anyone going shopping in the Market Place after 2.30pm as Gridlock begins after 3pm. Hardy Street is a secondary bypass as well as Victoria Road & Beresford Road. We have empty shops in Main Street and currently parking anywhere is a challenge depending on the time of your park. Tourists travel through they don’t all necessarily stop. Are we just a Dormitory Suburb and Town that exists for Health Services? Preserving the Past for the Future Lilydale District Historical Society Lilydale District Historical Society Preserving the Past for the Future about Lilydale District Historical Society Inc. Lilydale Yarra Valley The Lilydale District Historical Society was formed in 1971 to help plan and mount suitable displays for the Shire of Lillydales Centenary in February 1972. We opened and operated the Lilydale District Historical Museum in the old Lillydale Shire offices in Castella Street from 1976 to 1989. The custodian of the collection today is the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum.
