The Jane Franklin Hall
The Jane Franklin Hall is an independent, non-denominational residential college affiliated with the University of Tasmania, located in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Established in 1950 by the Tasmanian Council of Churches, the college initially served as a women's residential college before transitioning to co-educational status in 1973. It is the only college attached to the University of Tasmania that follows the Oxbridge collegiate model, emphasizing a comprehensive academic and social living experience for its students.
History and Background
Jane Franklin Hall was named in honor of Jane, Lady Franklin, the wife of Sir John Franklin, who was a noted Arctic explorer and the sixth Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land from 1837 to 1843. The college embraces Lady Franklin’s legacy by valuing education, community, and wellbeing among its members. Since opening its doors in early 1950, Jane has built a reputation for fostering a vibrant, supportive, and intellectually stimulating environment for university students.
Mission and Values
The college is committed to providing an authentic residential college experience that combines academic excellence with personal development and wellbeing. Its motto, Veritas Liberabit ("The truth will set you free"), reflects the institution’s focus on truth, learning, and growth. As a non-denominational Christian institution, Jane Franklin Hall is supported by chaplains from various Christian traditions, promoting inclusivity and spiritual support for students.
Location and Facilities
Situated in South Hobart, the college overlooks the city and is strategically located about halfway between the University of Tasmania’s Sandy Bay and city campuses. The residential halls provide close proximity to university facilities, with easy access via walking or a short bus ride, enhancing convenience for students.
Academic and Community Life
Jane Franklin Hall emphasizes academic development through a collegiate model that combines communal dining, shared experiences, and 24/7 academic and wellbeing support services. This approach fosters active learning, personal growth, and strong social connections among its residents. Students benefit from tailored programs designed to keep them connected and inspired, both during their studies and beyond, through a global alumni network.
Student Population and Leadership
The college accommodates approximately 190 students, including around 180 undergraduates and 10 postgraduates. The leadership is headed by a principal, with the current principal being Joanna Rosewell, MJ. Over the years, Jane has cultivated a diverse and accomplished community, including alumni working in academia, science, law, and international organizations.
Charity Status
The Jane Franklin Hall operates as a registered charity in Australia, with a focus on providing collegiate living experiences for university students. Donations to the college are tax-deductible, supporting its educational and community initiatives.
Jane Franklin Hall remains a distinctive feature of the Tasmanian and Australian higher education landscape, offering students a residential experience that blends tradition, academic rigor, and holistic personal development.

We were delighted to have University of Tasmania media lecturer Linda Hunt join us at our formal dinner, pictured here with two of our brilliant media students. At Jane, it’s not just about the food, it’s about who you’re sharing it with. (fb)
