As another #Biodiversitymonth ends, we wanted to offer one last insight to the critical work that regional NRM organisations are doing to protect our plants and critters. Natural resource managers always take an integrated land management approach, and the award winning Western Cape Turtle Threat Abatement program being delivered by six ranger groups with the support of Cape York Natural Resource Management is no exception. Thanks to the local Indigenous Ranger groups’ management of feral pigs on the Cape to reduce nest predation, a number of threatened turtle species are now making a comeback as the babies return to the sea to start the next generation. NRM Regions Australia CEO Dr Kate Andrews has been lucky enough to attend the National Landcare Conference on the Gold Coast this week - and the efforts of regional NRM organisations have been on show! The Dudley Peninsula Feral Cat Eradication team presented on their nation-leading cat control work on Kangaroo Island, which has deployed 270 4G connected cameras through an AI platform to enable near real time monitoring of both feral cat capture, and presence, across the eradication area. Combined with a trapping blitz, a Feline Hotline, and exclusion fencing, and strong community and First Nations partnerships, feral cats are now at their lowest numbers since the program commenced.
