Today is World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, a great time to recognise and celebrate the innovations that have connected us. Before the telephone and the internet, Hobart relied on flags, arms, and clever engineering to stay connected. In 1811, Hobart’s first signal station was built on Mt Nelson and communicated with Hobart using the Royal Navy’s standardised signal flags. Later, our local signal stations, including the one at Semaphore Cottage, used semaphore, a system of moving arms read by telescope, to send messages quickly across long distances. The first effective mechanical semaphore system was devised by French engineer Claude Chappe in 1794, and soon Van Diemen’s Land had its own network in place. This early system helped Hobart track ships, keep time, and share important news well before the telephone arrived at the signal station in 1880.
