The Toowoomba Historical Society is running its annual Refreshment Stall each day with the last day being Sunday 28 September. We are situated near the entry arch to the Botanical Gardens in Lindsay Street, opposite the Bowls Club. We are selling sandwiches, rolls, drinks, devonshire teas, tea, coffee, lamingtons, icecreams and a range of homemade slices. We also have plants, homemade jams, relishes and lemon butter. Tables are set up so you can enjoy your 'cuppa' in comfort while enjoying the gardens. All funds raised go towards the ongoing costs associated with the Historical Society. (fb)
ANZAC DAY 25 April 1925 One hundred years ago, on 25 April, members of the Returned Soldiers’ League were requested to assemble at the Memorial Hall at 8:00am. They proceeded to the Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery. At 10:00am, all returned soldiers gathered at the Drill Shed (next to the original Toowoomba State High School on the corner of Margaret and Hume Streets). At 10:20am, headed by bands, the soldiers proceeded to the Monument (Ruthven and Margaret Streets). A service commenced at 10:30am. At 10:50am, a parade of soldiers proceeded to three churches. The Municipal Band marched one group to St. James Church. The Toowoomba City Band lead another group to St Luke’s Church and the Pipe Band lead the final group to the Presbyterian Church. At 1:00pm the usual Anzac Day luncheon took place at the Masonic Hall. At 3:00pm, the Municipal Band again led a parade to the Monument where a wreath was laid in memory of all the battalions in which Queenslanders were represented. Finally, at 8:00pm, there was a public commemorative meeting at the Town Hall with a performance by the Philharmonic Choir and the City Band. All proceeds from the day went to the Diggers’ Distress Fund. It was also expected that no sport would be played on Anzac Day. As stated in the Toowoomba Chronicle and Darling Downs Gazette 28 March 1925, ‘… no fixtures of any description will take place on sacred Anzac Day, Saturday, 25 April. This is in conformity with the spirit of that great day of remembrance, when the flower of the young manhood of Australia first faced the Turkish hordes on the Gallipoli Peninsula’. (fb)
