Biopixel Oceans Foundation supports marine research, exploration and education. We conduct research into our oceans and the marine life within them to impact conservation decisions. Biopixel Oceans Foundation conducted shark research in the Whitsunday and North West Island regions and undertook a number of shark tagging expeditions. The Foundation undertook an expedition to the remote far northern region of the Great Barrier Reef to study whale sharks and manta rays. We found the first whale shark aggregation on the east coast of Australia, satellite tagged the first whale sharks and manta rays in the region, and also discovered what is likely the most significant Omura s whale aggregation site outside of Madagascar in the world. Population studies of bull and tiger sharks on the east coast of Australia are also underway. These activities helped the Foundation achieve its aim of supporting the protection and enhancement of our oceans through fostering a better understanding of shark behaviour and providing a data driven basis for determining shark policy. The discovery of whale shark and Omura s whale aggregations are key findings for both management in Australia and internationally. The Foundation shares live movement information of sharks to the public via the Reef Tracks website https://citizensgbr.org/explore/reeftracks. The far northern Great Barrier Reef expedition was documented on video and a documentary is being produced. Biopixel Oceans Foundation was also involved in another documentary on shark behaviour. These public outputs support the Foundation's aim to foster education and a better understanding of the need for environmental protection and preservation of the world's oceans by the general public.
