Australian Music Centre Ltd
The Australian Music Centre Ltd (AMC) is a leading nonprofit organisation dedicated to promoting and supporting art music in Australia. Established in 1974, it operates as a national service organisation rather than a professional association, focusing on the advancement of Australian composers and their works.
Mission and Activities
At the heart of the AMC's mission is a commitment to the representation, advocacy, promotion, and support of Australian art music. Initially, the organisation focused on contemporary classical music, but its scope has expanded over time to include experimental music, sound art, contemporary jazz, and improvisatory music. The AMC provides various services such as publishing, retail and distribution, education programs, and professional development schemes. These initiatives aim to enhance the visibility and appreciation of Australian music both domestically and internationally.
Governance and Funding
The Australian Music Centre was founded by James Murdoch, with John Davis serving as CEO from 1989 to 2021. In May 2021, Catherine Haridy took over as CEO, while Marshall McGuire assumed the role of chair of the board. The organisation is primarily funded by the Australia Council for the Arts (now known as Creative Australia). Despite previous funding challenges, the AMC secured funding assurances from 2021 to 2024.
Collections and Resources
The AMC houses an extensive repository of Australian scores, recordings, research papers, and teaching kits, comprising over 13,000 items created by more than 660 artists. This collection serves as a vital resource for scholars, educators, and music enthusiasts, offering unparalleled access to Australian musical heritage.
Partnerships and Events
The AMC collaborates with key organisations such as APRA AMCOS and Sounds Australia to promote Australian music globally. It also co-hosts the prestigious Art Music Awards, recognizing excellence in the field. Additionally, the AMC publishes Resonate Magazine, which provides insightful analysis and commentary on Australian art music.
Impact and Recognition
As a major advocacy and development organisation for Australian music, the AMC plays a crucial role in fostering a vibrant musical culture. Its efforts have significantly contributed to the international visibility of Australian composers and musicians, solidifying Australia's position in the global art music landscape.

Aksuna (Natasha Lin) is representing Australia as one of our 2025 Classical:NEXT Fellows. Born in Taiwan and raised in Australia, Natasha Lin—known artistically as Aksuna—is a pianist-composer now based in Germany. With a background spanning classical performance and music therapy, she blends technical virtuosity with cinematic storytelling and philosophical depth. Her body of work includes scores for independent films, two original solo piano albums, an EP, and multiple commissioned works. Through the Classical:NEXT Fellowship program, we are excited to support Aksuna on her journey to exploring new creative partnerships with artists, filmmakers, and industry leaders who share her vision in contemporary classical music. (fb)
With Classical:NEXT fast approaching, we'd like to introduce the two Australian Fellows making their way to the international hub for art music. First up is Connor D'Netto, who has been described as "the model contemporary Australian composer" by ABC Classic. His work represents a constant attempt to bring together sprawling artistic interests, creating connections across audiencecs and communities. Connor has been the recipient of awards including the Albert H Maggs Award (2022), the APRA AMCOS Professional Development Award (2021), and was a finalist for the 2023 Art Music Award for Work of the Year: Dramatic, for his opera, "The Call". Connor is also the Co-Director of the Brisbane-based organisation Dots+Loops, Australia's post-genre music and arts series. (fb)
