Australian Rotary Health is a national charitable organisation focused on funding health research and community education in Australia. Established in 1981 as the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund by Ian Scott of the Rotary Club of Mornington, it initially addressed sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) before expanding to broader family health issues and later specializing in mental health from 2000 onward.
History
The organisation originated from Ian Scott’s response to the impact of SIDS on families, leading to its founding with Royce Abbey as inaugural board chair. Early research confirmed prone infant sleeping as a key SIDS risk factor, prompting public campaigns that significantly reduced mortality rates. By 2009, it rebranded as Australian Rotary Health to reflect expanded community education efforts alongside research funding.
Focus areas
Mental health
Since 2000, the organisation has prioritized mental health research, becoming Australia’s largest non-governmental funder in the field. As of 2023, its focus narrowed exclusively to mental health in children aged 0–12. Funding mechanisms include:
- Research grants for preventive and curative solutions
- Postdoctoral fellowships supporting early-career researchers
- Ian Scott PhD Scholarships named after its founder
General health and education
The organisation maintains supplementary funding for:
- Rural medical and nursing scholarships
- Indigenous health education
- Bowel cancer screening awareness via Bowelscan initiatives
Governance
Affiliated with Rotary Clubs nationwide, Australian Rotary Health operates as a multi-district Rotary International project. Key figures include Joy Gillett OAM, who serves as CEO. Funding derives from public donations, Rotary Club contributions, and annual campaigns like October’s Hat Day, which combines fundraising with mental health awareness activities.
