New research from Macquarie University shows that cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, and exercise are among the most effective long-term treatments for chronic low back pain. Notably, combining physical and psychological therapies provides even greater benefits over time. The meta-analysis reviewed 75 clinical trials assessing 20 non-surgical treatments for chronic back pain lasting a year or more. Interventions such as massage, manipulation, nutritional supplements, pain education, injections and goal setting were considered in their review. The study, published in Lancet Rheumatology, is the first review and meta-analysis to specifically assess the long-term effectiveness of interventions for chronic low back pain. New research has found that fewer than 1 in 10 hospitals in NSW and Victoria have policies to guide surrogacy births, prompting urgent calls from experts for national standards. A review of 112 metropolitan hospitals revealed that only 10 had surrogacy care policies in place — leaving health professionals, surrogates and intended parents facing inconsistent care, legal uncertainty and emotional stress. Lead author Kabir Sattarshetty from Charles Darwin University says surrogacy is becoming an increasingly common pathway to parenthood, but hospitals are unprepared. “Without clear policies, hospitals risk excluding intended parents from delivery rooms, delaying newborn bonding, and creating confusion around feeding and decision-making,” Mr Sattarshetty said.
