Exciting news! Can Too Foundation has recently awarded a new research grant to Dr Narges Bayat at Children's Cancer Institute, University of New South Wales. Dr Narges Bayat’s work will focus on the development of a new, minimally invasive imaging tool for detecting residual cancer cells for more accurate and earlier detection, and to accelerate the development of more effective treatments for high-risk leukaemia. Currently acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a type of blood cancer, is the most common childhood cancer. And early detection of relapse is crucial for improved survival. Dr Bayat shared “Thanks to CanToo, I am excited to introduce Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) for monitoring childhood leukaemia in Australia - a first of its kind. Currently, imaging is not used for leukaemia monitoring due to challenges in detecting individual leukaemia cells. Our project will develop targeted nanoparticles to specifically identify residual leukaemia cells, offering a precise, non-invasive alternative to bone marrow biopsies. This enhanced detection could lead to earlier treatment interventions." We hope that Dr Bayat’s work will play a key role in supporting more people affected by cancer in the future.
