The Young Carer Bursary is an initiative of the Young Carers Network and Carers Australia. Each year, it provides financial support to help young people who are balancing study with caring for someone. Today marks the start of National Carers Week 2025. This year’s theme is ‘You are one, know one, or will be one’, underscoring just how widespread and invaluable the role of a carer is. Roughly one in six Tasmanians are carers — that’s more than 87,000 people caring for a family member or friend with disability, mental ill health, chronic or life-limiting illness, drug or alcohol dependence, or who is frail aged. National Carers Week (12–18 October) provides an opportunity to recognise the contributions of unpaid carers across Australia — people whose tireless efforts often go unnoticed. To help carers receive the support they deserve, Carers Tasmania, with support from the Tasmanian Government, is hosting two expos where carers can connect with Carer Gateway and many other services and providers. These will be held in Launceston on 15 October and Burnie on 16 October. Cuppa with a Carer events to celebrate carers will be held across the state, with more than 30 Carer Support Groups and other community organisations participating. And to mark the week, a number of landmarks across Tasmania will light up blue.
