Teen Ranch Ltd

Teen Ranch Ltd is a nonprofit organization based in Australia that operates outdoor adventure camps designed to provide affordable camping and recreational experiences for youth and schools. Established in 1961, the organization aims to introduce young people to Christian values through engaging outdoor activities delivered in a safe, educational, and enjoyable environment.

History

The idea for Teen Ranch originated in 1953 when Doug Gibb, inspired by camping ministry models he observed in Maryland, USA, envisioned a similar ministry for Australian youth. Along with a Canadian singing group called The King’s Men, Doug Gibb toured Australia for two years, promoting the concept through radio and television. This effort culminated in the purchase of a property on the banks of the Nepean River in Cobbitty, New South Wales, on land formerly part of the Pomare Grove estate granted in 1817.

The property included Pomare House, a heritage-listed two-storey residence built in 1902, which remains a significant part of Teen Ranch’s legacy. With the support of volunteers, the camp was founded on 1 April 1961 and has been operating continuously since then.

Mission and Activities

Teen Ranch’s mission is to introduce young people to Jesus Christ by providing an affordable, enjoyable, and educational camp experience facilitated by a community of caring Christians. The organization subsidizes a portion of its guests to ensure accessibility and inclusivity.

The camps offer a wide range of outdoor activities, including horse riding, high ropes courses, rock climbing, and combat archery, designed to engage young participants physically and spiritually while fostering growth and development.

Governance and Leadership

Teen Ranch is governed by a Board of Directors composed of former full-time and voluntary staff members with extensive experience in camping ministries. The board oversees the organization’s policies and mission implementation.

Resident Directors, who live on-site, are responsible for executing the board’s policies and managing daily camp operations in alignment with Teen Ranch’s mission objectives.

Legacy and Impact

Over the decades, Teen Ranch has become well-regarded for its impactful ministry and commitment to youth development through outdoor recreation and Christian education. Its longstanding presence on the historic Cobbitty site and its continued operation affirm its role as a unique and valued nonprofit organization within Australia’s youth ministry landscape.
