The Maremma dilemma continues. We are constantly contacted to take in dogs. We can't responsibly take more than we can physically and financially take proper care of. There's over 50 Maremmas here atm. 3 will soon go to the Hunter Valley. 1 to Glen Innes and 1 to Inverell. We have a very high success rate for rehoming Maremmas. This is because the vast majority of our Maremmas go to working homes. This year we have successfully rehomed 71 Maremmas, almost all to working homes. One didn't work out due to her disliking the men in the adoptive family. She had bad experiences with men in an early life. She was fine with Zac here at Kindly so we thought she would be okay there, but sometimes Maremmas decide to dislike certain people. We replaced her with another dog. We recommend that most people don't get a Maremma. Get a Labrador! Particularly those requesting them for pet homes rather than working homes. Some pet homes are successful but the fact that we are constantly asked to take pet Maremmas that people have had that 4, 5, 6 and even up to 8 years old shows there are problems. We don't recommend other people have access to your Maremma. Almost everyone we know who has been bitten by them is a family friend or relative. Its pretty much always human error but the dog pays the price. Easily avoidable. Keep your dog separate to other people. Its not just Maremmas. Recently in the Hunter Valley a 16 yr old girl was attacked at a friend's place by their dog and she died from injuries. That's absolutely tragic and avoidable. Our dogs are adopted under very strict adoption contracts and if our young pups go anywhere, they're fostered by their forever adopters under air-tight desexing contracts. A pup of ours was placed under a Foster To Adopt contract in a non-working home where she was required to be desexed before a certain date, and that hadn't happened. A breach of desexing contract is something we take very seriously. We were just about to commence the process to repossess the dog. A fairly straightforward process due to our contracts. Before we started this process a Pound called to say she has been impounded after being found as a stray!!!! This dog is now coming back to Kindly. We will now have transport and desexing costs for her 🙄 Given that we reject about 75% of adoption applications it was a very disappointing outcome for this dog. We try so hard to get it right every time. We put a massive amount of work into these dogs. They were all somebody else's problem. A problem those owners created and didn't own. The endless lists of 'problems' these dogs allegedly have are pretty much human problems. At Kindly they don't continue to have these problems, so that tells you a lot. Almost every dog here was on death row in a Pound. Dogs are a pack animal and need strong and consistent leadership. We are lucky to have a nfp group coming to help in a few weeks. The barn is progressing! The roofing and wall sheeting has been delayed the last few weeks due to wind, weather and tradie availability but we're getting there. We need to start a fundraiser for at least two big 130, 000 litre tanks. They're about $15 000 each 🙄. The barn is big and will have the ability to catch a lot of precious rain water but we need the capacity to store it. Poor old Ghost dog continues to recover. He never looks at anyone, head down avoiding absolutely everything. Sometimes they need time, plus he's just had 2 surgeries. Artemis is doing well and has more training this week when Janine takes her back to Phil Evans at Yes Dog Training.
