Gallery Kaiela Incorporated is an Aboriginal art centre and nonprofit organisation based in Shepparton, Victoria, Australia. Established in 2006, it operates on Yorta Yorta Nation lands and serves as a community-owned studio gallery supporting over 60 Koorie artists[2][4].
The organisation provides artists with access to materials, equipment, and collaborative spaces, fostering cultural connection through contemporary and traditional art forms. It emphasises the preservation of Aboriginal stories, history, and knowledge systems, often expressed through mediums such as painting, ceramics, and weaving[1][3].
Activities and programs
Kaiela Arts hosts cultural workshops, gallery tours, and artist talks, focusing on art-making and storytelling as vehicles for education. Workshops accommodate groups of up to 20 participants and include activities such as basket weaving and ceramic creation led by local artists[1]. The centre also runs school holiday programs and collaborates with institutions like the Shepparton Art Museum for exhibitions and community projects[1][5].
Artistic focus
Artworks produced at Kaiela Arts often reflect themes of ancestral connection and environmental stewardship, with examples including Brett Wilson’s depictions of native species such as perch (Dhaika), kangaroo (Wotogoa), and frog (Dhangoba)[1]. The centre’s operations align with its mission to strengthen cultural identity and promote intergenerational knowledge sharing[4][5].
Organisational structure
As a nonprofit, Gallery Kaiela Incorporated is governed by its community members, prioritising self-determination and cultural leadership. Its activities are funded through art sales, grants, and partnerships[3][4].
