✨ Madeleine Quy is one half of our exceptional Media and Ambassador team, breaking inspiring news stories about the Leukaemia Foundation across Australia. Our recent ‘Make It Count’ Recognition Award winner, Madeleine is inspired by the patients, families, carers and healthcare professionals who trust her to share their stories. 🗣️“I speak with people bravely facing blood cancer, to understand their lived experiences better and share their stories via TV, radio, podcasts, magazines and newspapers. Many people find sharing their cancer journey or learning about someone else’s helps them feel less alone. “By thoughtfully sharing people’s lived experiences, we can grow awareness of the signs and symptoms of blood cancer, leading to earlier diagnoses and access to treatment. “I also work in tandem with our dedicated group of Ambassadors to raise awareness of blood cancer, and the Foundation’s investment into research, advocacy and support services. “Getting to work on the World's Greatest Shave was a highlight this year, especially seeing the outpouring of generosity and community spirit from fundraisers around Australia. “One of the most memorable moments was filming with 10 News First Melbourne. It was 36 degrees, and we filmed outdoors as a father selflessly shaved his head for his stepdaughter, who has leukaemia. “It was so special to see everyone involved, from the family and their friends to our Head of Research, Hair Ambassador, and the 10 News crew. Everybody was so committed to the moment and his act of kindness, raising funds for families affected by blood cancer. “Even though we have ‘leukaemia’ in our name, the Leukaemia Foundation helps anyone impacted by any blood cancer. That free support extends to friends and family members, too.” Our Recognition Awards are all about celebrating staff who go above and beyond when it comes to our values: Be Bold, Care Deeply and Make It Count. Nominated by their peers, these awards highlight the passion, kindness and commitment our people bring to the Leukaemia Foundation’s mission every day. Thank you, Madeleine, for making your actions count to best support our community. We truly value your efforts to make a difference for all people in Australia impacted by blood cancer. 📲 For expert blood cancer support, resources and more, visit👇 https://www.leukaemia.org.au/about-us/ (fb)
🙏 "I had to almost beg for a blood test." Mel had a persistent sore throat, unresolved tonsillitis, and fatigue. As she was grieving for her beloved Grandma, and 39 at the time, she didn't think much of it. But after seeing her GP on multiple occasions with no resolution, she advocated for a blood test. The next day, she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), a rare type of blood cancer. 🗣️ "Within 24 hours of being diagnosed, I had to go home, say goodbye to my children, and begin intensive chemotherapy at Canberra Hospital. "I was absolutely terrified. I have a beautiful wife, three amazing kids, and a life that I love. My mind was spinning, but my specialist told me to focus on the fact that a cure was possible. "My wife was an absolute superhero, taking on all of the responsibilities at home and keeping life as normal as possible for my little ones. "While I achieved remission in 2022, I unfortunately relapsed in 2023. This meant returning to inpatient treatment for another gruelling round of chemo so I could try a stem cell transplant. "While I had multiple 100% donor matches on the worldwide database, these fell through at the last minute. Thankfully, my amazing brother Jay was a 50% donor match and gave me a second chance at life. 💙 "From the day of my diagnosis, we were supported by the Leukaemia Foundation through education, emotional support, and providing accommodation close to Westmead Hospital for my transplant. "During my blood cancer journey, one of the most uplifting moments came when Penrith Panthers' Scott Sorensen reached out to offer support. It was his kindness and encouragement that gave my family a much-needed boost during our darkest times. "My goal now is to spend all my time making precious family memories, connecting with others on a similar journey, educating people on how to recognise symptoms of blood cancer and advocate for themselves. "I'll continue to support the Leukaemia Foundation and encourage people to consider joining the Stem Cell Donors Australia registry. Together, we can save lives." 📲 Learn more about the common signs and symptoms of blood cancer on bloodcancer.org.au 👇 https://lf.org.au/3RtA545 (fb)
