Home - Tasmanian Wool Centre

Our non-profit business is the largest retailer of woollens in Tasmania. Open 7 days a week! The Wool Centre Museum Fund is used to operate a Museum to tell the stories of the history of the Ross area with a particular emphasis on the importance of the wool industry to the area. In 2022 the Museum was open on 362 days with visitor numbers of over 27,000. This was an increase of 35% on the previous year but remains well below prepandemic levels. During 2022, the Museum showcased two touring exhibitions: Dancing in Fetters , telling the story of convict dance, and Knit your Bits , curated by Tasmanian Womens Health. Behind the scenes the Museum also undertook an audit of the collection and began work to improve storage and record keeping for the collection. Ongoing work to catalogue new acquisitions and care for the collection continued.

Wool Centre Museum Fund
The Wool Centre Museum Fund is an Australian nonprofit organisation operating the Tasmanian Wool Centre Museum in Ross, Tasmania. Registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), its primary purpose is to preserve and interpret the cultural heritage of the Ross region, with a focus on the historical significance of the wool industry in Tasmania[1][2].

History and Activities
The organisation operates a museum that showcases the development of Ross as a Georgian village, emphasizing the economic and social impact of wool production on the region. Exhibitions include a re-created shearing shed, historical artifacts, and archival materials related to wool processing, alongside documents detailing Ross' colonial past[4].

Collections and Exhibitions
The museum houses two main galleries:

  • Wool Gallery: Features tactile displays, including a manually operated wool press, fleece samples, and textile art such as John Coburn’s woollen tapestry The Canticle (1966).
  • History Gallery: Explores Ross’ colonial heritage through exhibits on the Ross Bridge, Female Factory, and Horton College, alongside rotating displays of local memorabilia[4].

Cultural Role
The museum serves as a repository for genealogical records, including convict registers and early Anglican burial documents, aiding historical research into Tasmania’s settlement era[4]. Its operations are supported through the Wool Centre Museum Fund, which ensures ongoing conservation and public access to the collections[1][2].
