Legacy Australia Incorporated
Legacy Australia Incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the families of Australian veterans who have died or become incapacitated as a result of their service in war, peacekeeping, and humanitarian missions. Founded in 1923 by a group of World War I veterans, Legacy continues to uphold its commitment to care for the widows, children, and dependents of veterans who have given their lives or health in service.
Mission and Services
Legacy's mission is rooted in providing essential social and financial support to the families affected by the loss or incapacitation of their loved ones. Its services include:
- Supporting Basic Needs: Ensuring that the fundamental necessities of individuals and families are met.
- Advocacy for Entitlements and Rights: Advocating for the entitlements, rights, and benefits of veterans' families.
- Bereavement Assistance: Assisting families to cope with grief and loss.
- Promoting Resilience and Well-being: Helping families to thrive despite adversity and loss.
Operations and Structure
Legacy operates through a network of over 45 clubs across Australia, with more than 3,600 volunteers known as Legatees who provide personal support and act as mentors. The organization supports over 60,000 beneficiaries, with a significant focus on elderly widows and dependents with disabilities.
History and Development
Legacy was established on a promise made by veterans in 1923 to care for their comrades' families. Over the years, it has evolved to include support for families of personnel involved in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions. The organization is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission and holds Deductible Gift Recipient status, enabling it to raise and manage funds effectively.
Impact and Recognition
Legacy is recognized for its unique approach to care, emphasizing personal contact with families through volunteer Legatees. The organization's symbol, the Badge of Legacy, represents the enduring spirit of service and sacrifice. Throughout its history, Legacy has remained true to its founding principles, making it a cornerstone of support for Australian veterans' families.

Legacy would like to thank Gwen Cherne for her service as the inaugural DVA Veteran Family Advocate Commissioner. Gwen has been a tireless champion for veteran families for the last five years, bringing compassion, insight and dedication to the role. Her legacy will continue to shape the support and advocacy provided to those who have served and their loved ones. Melbourne Legacy's Annabelle Wilson has been appointed as the next Commissioner. Annabelle served as Chief Operating Officer for Melbourne Legacy and led transformative work in modernising service delivery and advocacy. As a widow of a veteran, Annabelle brings a deeply personal understanding of the challenges faced by veteran families and a passionate commitment to achieving meaningful outcomes.
