Did you know that the 30th of September is recognised as the feast day of Saint Jerome? In the 4th and 5th century AD, Jerome translated the Bible into Latin, a text which is now referred to as the Vulgate. That’s why we commemorate International Translation Day today. Bible translation has historically been greatly influential; from Luther’s Bible in German which not only strengthened the Reformation, but increased literacy across Germany and developed the German language itself, to Tyndale’s translation of the Bible into English, which have had a lasting impact on the English language. Bible translation remains vital work, and is part of broader mission work which involves language and community development.
