Tas Conservation Trust Inc
The Tas Conservation Trust Inc (ABN: 63091237520RR0001) is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the preservation of Tasmania's unique biodiversity, natural values, and cultural heritage. Founded in 1968, it is one of Tasmania's oldest and most established conservation groups, operating as an independent advocate and guardian for the island's natural environment.
Mission and Activities
The core mission of the Trust is to safeguard Tasmania's ecological and heritage assets through advocacy, community engagement, and educational outreach. The organization works closely with local residents, landowners, and communities to address concerns related to environmental degradation, particularly issues stemming from over-development.
The Tas Conservation Trust assists individuals and groups seeking advice on environmental planning and development, offering support to:
- Residents concerned about development on publicly owned land
- Landowners aiming to rehabilitate their properties
- Local communities opposing the destruction of native biodiversity
Additionally, the Trust helps protect significant habitats for threatened or endangered species, negotiates protections for local natural areas and amenities, and provides guidance for appeals against major developments that may harm the environment.
Conservation Approach
A substantial part of the Trust’s work involves facilitating dialogue between concerned citizens, developers, and governmental bodies to find balanced solutions. They advocate for compromises that allow sustainable development without sacrificing Tasmania's natural heritage. In some cases, their efforts have successfully prevented damaging developments.
Publications and Outreach
The organization publishes a quarterly journal titled Tasmanian Conservationist, which covers current conservation issues, campaigns, and updates relevant to Tasmania’s environment. It maintains an active online presence to engage the public and foster environmental stewardship across the state.
Legacy
With a long history of significant conservation outcomes, the Tas Conservation Trust has played a vital role in protecting Tasmania's environment for over five decades. Its efforts contribute to raising awareness and empowering everyday Tasmanians to participate in conserving the natural places they value.
Tas Conservation Trust Inc represents a key pillar in Tasmania’s environmental community, continuing a tradition of grassroots activism and professional advocacy to ensure the island’s natural and cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.

Blackmans Bay #SCRAPTHEDAP Public Meeting: DATE: Thursday, 20 March 2025. TIME: 6.30- 8pm ADDRESS: Blackmans Bay Hall, 24 Ocean Esplanade, Blackmans Bay. The Tasmanian Liberal Government want to remove planning appeal rights and replace local councils with a “developer-friendly” assessment and approval process (DAPs), on private and public land, including our World Heritage Areas and National Parks. It is critical for transparency, democracy and good planning that checks and balances are in place, ensuring property developers and decision makers are kept to account. DAPs and removal of appeal rights put these at risk and take local councillors, voters, ratepayers and communities out of planning. The Government has released a draft DAP Bill with public comment closing 24 April 2025. MC: Sophie Underwood - PMAT, State Director, Anne Harrison - Blackmans Bay Community Association & Tasmanian Planning Information Network, Peter McGlone - CEO, Tasmanian Conservation Trust, Meg Webb - Independent Member for Nelson of the Legislative Council *More speakers to be announced (fb)
UPDATE: Thanks to our incredible supporters we've reach our initial $25k target 🥳. So to help strengthen CHCAN's effort to stop this wind farm we've set a stretch goal of $35k which we are hoping to meet by February 14th. Your contribution will still make a huge difference for this community group and to keep Robbins Island safe. (fb)
