HSI continued our work to build an ecologically sustainable world for all animals by being leaders in saving endangered species and their habitats; aiding animals in crisis; and reducing cruelty in farming, trade and other industries. Below is a sample of what we achieved in FY22: The east coast populations of koalas were listed as an Endangered Species thanks to our nomination, submitted jointly with two other conservation organisations. As a result of this listing an additional $50 million in federal funding has been announced to help recover the populations. To date, we have successfully nominated more than 75 species for protection under Federal law. Our nominations also saw an additional six Threatened Ecological Communities protected in law this year taking our tally to 45 of 100 listed (45%) under the EPBC Act. These are important habitats for endangered spottedtail quolls, ganggang cockatoos, Malleefowl, southern brown bandicoots, koalas, Eastern pygmy possums and green and golden bell frogs. We continue to work with government to ensure that reform of Australia s EPBC Act will deliver positive outcomes for nature with strong national standards as a foundation to halt the extinction crisis. We have welcomed the government s commitment to establishment of an independent Environmental Protection Agency and we continued to advocate for wellresourced recovery plans, merits reviews, and many other additional measures to prevent further biodiversity loss. Our advocacy helped to save the spectacled flyingfox from losing its right to a recovery plan when the former government decided to ditch recovery plans for 176 threatened species earlier this year. We remain a key member of the Spectacled FlyingFox Recovery Team advocating for increased protections. This year we welcomed 64 new members to the Wildlife Land Trust, spanning 2,575 hectares. Our network now spans 806 wildlifefriendly sanctuaries over 80,000 hectares. We continued to build support for the removal of shark nets with both NSW and Queensland increasing their support for nonlethal alternatives. Along with AMCS and the EDO we published a report which revealed a lack of accuracy in Australian import and export data regarding the trade in shark fins. The report showed the need for much stricter controls to ensure Australia is not contributing to the unsustainable trade in shark fins. HSI sent a submission to three NSW Parliament Inquiries on Puppy Farming, on the NSW Animal Welfare Bill and on the use of primates and other animals in medical research. We have also submitted to the consultation on Queensland's draft animal welfare legislation and to reforms of the animal welfare reforms in Tasmania and Victoria. We continue to support wildlife carers after the Black Summer bushfires providing 46 grants which directly benefitted over 2000 native animals this year.
