A third of Aussie students are being left behind — and it’s time to act. The 2025 NAPLAN results show that 1 in 3 students aren’t meeting national standards in literacy or numeracy. The numbers are even worse for students in very remote areas, Indigenous communities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. This isn’t just a school problem — it’s a problem that affects the whole Nation. Students who start behind often stay behind, risking poorer outcomes in education, employment, and mental health. But there’s hope. With growing support of philanthropists, educators, and community organisations, targeted action can be a catalyst for change. The data shows exactly where help is needed — and offers a roadmap for impact. If we focus support where it’s needed most, we can change the story for tens of thousands of young Australians. NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate and learn from the world’s oldest continuous living culture, and at Schools Plus, we’re proud to support schools doing just that. At Mossman State School in Far North Queensland, the ‘Culture Heals’ project is transforming student wellbeing and engagement through deep cultural connection. With over half the school’s 314 students identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and more than a third experiencing chronic absenteeism, the school is tackling entrenched challenges with a holistic, community-led response. Co-designed with Kuku Yalanji Elders and young leaders, the initiative includes: • Weekly dance and language classes • On-Country camps • Fortnightly yarning circles with Elders These experiences are strengthening identity, belonging, and pride, helping students reconnect with learning and thrive.
