The Tasmanian Youth Orchestra Council Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing music education, development, and performance opportunities to young musicians in Tasmania. History and Structure
Established on November 1, 1999, the organization has been active for over two decades, promoting classical music in Tasmania. As an Other Incorporated Entity, it falls under the Goods & Services Tax (GST) since September 11, 2017.
Programs and Activities
The Tasmanian Youth Orchestra Council Inc. delivers a range of programs through the Tasmanian Youth Orchestras (TYO), which cater to musicians aged seven to 25. The flagship ensemble, the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra, offers advanced musicians aged 14 to 25 the opportunity to rehearse and perform challenging symphonic repertoire at least three times annually. Additionally, collaborations with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra provide unique learning experiences.
Educational Focus
TYO emphasizes both musical development and leadership skills. The organization operates with a rotation policy for musical roles, except for key leadership positions like Concertmaster, Associate Concertmaster, and Principal Second, which are annually appointed through auditions. This approach fosters a culture of mutual respect and encourages broad musical skill development.
Choral Programs
Beyond instrumental ensembles, TYO also offers choral programs, known as the Tasmanian Chorales, which focus on vocal technique and musicianship. These programs provide opportunities for singers to develop their skills without requiring auditions for entry.

The Tasmanian Youth Orchestra Council Inc. envisions Tasmania as a vibrant place for classical music, where young people can thrive.
