Science Teachers' Association of Western Australia (STAWA)

The Science Teachers’ Association of Western Australia is an independent association of Science Educators dedicated to promoting science/science teaching in WA. STAWA is an independent association promoting science and science teaching in WA. Leadership STAWA continues to provide effective leadership and advocacy. Members are represented on many bodies and participate in most science educationrelated projects, activities and events. STAWA has School Curriculum and Standards Authority, Curriculum Advisory Committee membership on all science subjects including the newly created K10 committees. Part of the Governor s STEM award working group, the West Australian Coordinating Committee (WACC) to deliver National Science Week in WA under the Inspiring Australia program, invitations to the Premier s Science Awards and various STEM education consultation groups. The STAWA Primary Science Committee and the Psychology Teachers Committee are two very proactive committees. They are both active in their advocacy and support of the teaching of science in primary schools and psychology in secondary schools respectively. Teacher Learning CONSTAWA, Future Science, the Psychology Teachers Convention and The Marine and Maritime Teachers Forum represent STAWAs four key conference type events. Evaluations of these events, published in SCIOS, demonstrate excellence in professional learning and positive outcomes for our teachers. Subject specific professional learning workshops were also delivered throughout 202122, including Psychology, primary science, secondary science teachers digital data collection and Year 710 Physical Sciences program for the Department of Education during the January and July school holidays for Master of Science students. Resourcing Quality teaching and learning resources have formed the foundation of STAWA s financial success. Our resources include Exploring Chemistry Year 11 and 12, Exploring Physics Year 11 and 12, Exploring Human Biological Science Year 11, Psychological Research, Theorists and Studies, and the ATAR Psychology Teacher Survival Guide eBook. New resources are been created for the new General Human biology courses. Student Engagement STAWA continues to deliver quality engagement and enrichment opportunities including Science Talent Search, Physics Day @ Adventure World, and the Synergy Schools Solar Challenge.
