Waverley Action for Youth Services (WAYS) is a non-profit organisation based in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Australia, established in 1979. It provides multidisciplinary social support services for young people aged 9–25 and their families, including counselling, case management, recreational activities, education and training programs, health promotion, and clinical services[1][2][5].
History
WAYS was recognised by the New South Wales Parliament for its community support over 35 years, focusing on empowering youth through integrated programs. In 2004, the organisation attempted to purchase the former Bondi Police Station for emergency youth accommodation, but the plan stalled due to rising property costs[2]. The service operates a sexual health clinic in Bondi Junction[2] and faced public scrutiny in 2015 when its board distanced itself from Waverley Mayor Sally Betts following controversial remarks about implementing school programs to reduce "risky behaviour" among girls[2].
Services
WAYS delivers school workshops addressing drug and alcohol awareness, resilience, peer relationships, and bullying[2]. It offers accredited vocational training to facilitate employment pathways and provides a "one-stop-shop" model with specialist staff for case management and crisis support[3][5]. Programs include music tuition, alternative education, and recreational drop-in activities[1][2].
Leadership
Russell King serves as CEO, overseeing operations across Sydney’s Eastern, Inner, and Southern suburbs[2]. The organisation emphasises creating opportunities for youth through its mission of "PASSION | EMPOWERED | SUCCESS | CONFIDENT | OPPORTUNITY | INSPIRED"[5].
