Totally Renewable Yackandandah Inc.
Totally Renewable Yackandandah Inc. (TRY) is a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit community organization based in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia. Established with the ambitious mission to transition the small town to 100% renewable energy, TRY focuses on reducing emissions, enhancing resilience against energy disruptions, and delivering cost savings to the community through clean, local energy solutions.
History and Mission
Formed in 2014 by a group of local residents, Totally Renewable Yackandandah set out to demonstrate that a rural town could achieve complete reliance on renewable energy by 2024. The organization operates through partnerships with community members and relevant organizations to inspire, develop, and implement projects that advance Yackandandah’s clean energy transition.
Activities and Projects
TRY’s initiatives include the installation of solar panels and battery storage on public buildings across the town, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and increase local energy independence. A notable milestone was reached when 10 public buildings, including the Yackandandah Public Hall, were outfitted with solar installations totaling 74 kW capacity, combined with 13 kWh of battery storage using smart energy controllers. These installations are expected to generate approximately 102 MWh annually, which is sufficient to power around 18 homes. The batteries also provide backup power during mains outages, enhancing energy resilience in emergencies.
The organization has developed community battery projects such as 'Yack02,' located at the Yackandandah Sports Park, aimed to be operational to further support local renewable energy storage and distribution.
Community Engagement
Totally Renewable Yackandandah actively shares its journey and learnings with other communities to inspire similar transitions. The group holds informal gatherings and projects that bring multiple benefits, including environmental, economic, and social improvements to Yackandandah.
Recognition
TRY is recognized for its grassroots leadership in the renewable energy sector and exemplifies effective community-driven action toward climate solutions in regional Australia.
This summary reflects information available as of early 2025 and highlights Totally Renewable Yackandandah Inc.’s role as a pioneering force in community renewable energy transition in Victoria[1][2][3][5].

We take water heating ♨ for granted, but you can have that essential hot water still always 'on tap' 😆 and save up to ~$400 per year on average. That is the yearly savings over 15 years (including the appliance cost) by installing an efficient heat pump, or even higher if you have your own solar system. Key benefits are achieved by using a timer to heat water during the middle of the day, when time-of-use tariffs will be lowest, or your own solar system is generating power. Locals Clare & Nick: “We live in an old house that we’re trying to make more efficient and the gas hot water unit needed replacing, which was a great opportunity to upgrade to an electric heat pump. It saves us about $300 a year, means we don't buy bottled gas and our hot water comes through significantly faster - so we're saving water too!” TRY is one of a collective of community groups around Australia promoting the benefits of electrification. A bit more than a week ago we again had the privilege of hosting the Parliamentary Secretary, Sheena Watt. It was terrific having Sheena Watt MP pass through following her attendance at our 10th Anniversary in November last year, (and a heartfelt speech). Ms Watt came to visit our newly placed Community Battery, Yack 02, funded substantially through the 100 Neighbourhood Battery Program, courtesy of Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action and Australian Ethical Investment. The 200kWh battery will lower bills, cut carbon emissions and serve as a backup power supply when needed during sustained outages. The potential exists to also progressively remove the few remaining gas appliances as part of a broader strategy by Indigo Shire Council With thanks also to the Sports Park Committee, Yackandandah Community Centre, KDEC and Indigo Power.
