Working for environmental and social justice Friends of the Earth Melbourne works across the campaign areas identified below. Climate Change and Energy: A major focus continues to be the securing of sciencebased emission reduction targets for Victoria. In 2021/22, our campaigning and education efforts focused on the public consultation regarding Victoria s 2035 Emissions Reduction Target. FoE collaborated with RMIT University and six Victoria Unions (the Health and Community Services Union, Community and Public Sector Union, Rail, Tram and Bus Union, Hospo Voice, Retail and Fast Food Workers Union, and the Australian Services Union) on the pioneering Climate Impacts at Work project which surveyed union members in different industries to investigate how climate change is already affecting workers. AntiNuclear We continued to support the campaign by the Traditional Custodians of the land announced to house the nuclear waste dump in South Australia, the Barngarla People. Forests and Biodiversity FoE works across a range of areas relating to the protection of native forests and threatened species. During 2021/22, FoE continued to work for a rapid, just, and ecologicallysound transition out of native forest logging. This involved deepening relationships with farming communities, local businesses, traditional owner groups and agroforestry growers, with a focus on the Murrindindi shire area. Strzelecki Ranges FoE continues to work to protect the endemic and genetically robust Strzelecki/ South Gippsland Koala. We believe that this species of koala may be able to better withstand climate change and disease due to its genetic diversity. Biodiversity and Fire FoE has expanded its policy work on fire and land management, with an emphasis on calling for adequate resources to protect firesensitive communities (including Alpine Ash forests, cool and temperate rainforests and Snow Gum woodlands) from intense fire FoE started to host citizen science fieldtrips to map areas of Snow Gum forests in the Victorian mountains. These forests are largely protected in national parks, but are threatened by climatedriven fire regimes, and dieback caused by a native beetle which is increasing in population due to warmer winters. Information collected was then provided to Parks Victoria to assist in planning for future fires and guide restoration programs. Water Biosolids are the major product created from the wastewater treatment process and are used for a number of purposes. FoE researched the likely impacts of the use of biosolids in Victoria, using data released through FOI requests. FoE analysed other data from Victorian water authorities and produced research reports on PFAS in drinking water and groundwater pollution. Sustainable Cities FoE s Sustainable Cities collective launched a new campaign Better Buses, which is a community led transport campaign for frequent, reliable, electric buses in Melbourne's western suburbs.
