This Biodiversity Month, we will be celebrating the efforts of our regional members and communities working tirelessly to protect the most vulnerable species. Last month, keepers, volunteers and community members joined forces in the Capertee Valley, NSW, to restore vital habitat for Regent Honeyeater. With fewer than 250 left in the wild this species is listed as critically endangered under the EPBC Act. For more than three decades, local volunteers and organisations like Birdlife Southern NSW have been planting trees, restoring bushland and ensuring a future for this striking species. 15 years ago, Taronga Zoo Sydney, Taronga Western Plains Zoo volunteers also joined the efforts. To date, 485 Taronga-bred Regent Honeyeaters have been released and monitored in the wild. (fb)
