Across the world, Jewish communities mark Lag B’Omer with bonfires, symbolising spiritual light and hope. Originally commemorating the end of a plague that claimed 24,000 lives, Lag B’Omer now also stands in the shadow of another tragedy. In just eight weeks in 1944, this same period saw over 437,000 Hungarian Jews deported to Auschwitz. Most never returned.
