Surf Life Saving Sydney is the administrative arm of Surf Life Saving for the fifteen Surf Life Saving Clubs stretching from North Bondi south to Burning Palms. To promote and ensure that Surf Life Saving (SLS) and other Emergency Services provided by members from the 15 SLS Clubs that form the Sydney Branch, meet agreed service standards and are undertaken by qualified and proficient volunteers. Deploy assets across patrolled beaches and the coastline from North Bondi south to Burning Palms in the Royal National Park, with the aim of preserving life in the aquatic environment. Develop and provide structured training courses, diverse development activities along with competency assessments. Invest in technology and implement strategies that help achieve our purpose, to save lives, create great Australians and build better communities. Oversight surf sports and other events, ensuring that they meet Workplace Health and Safety Standards, are inclusive and encourage diversity. Renewed activity post COVID19 resulted in a productive and exciting year which culminated in SLS Sydney being awarded New South Wales Branch of the Year. Lingering pandemic restrictions and protocols impacted the first half of the year. While significant storm events and adverse environmental conditions made the balance of the season challenging in fulfilling our primary focus, the prevention of drowning and injury along Sydney s coastline . Beyond the beaches, increased rain resulted in major flooding which saw our members and equipment engaged in emergency flood response activities across Western Sydney , the Nepean River as well as the North and South Coasts. These activities were in stark contrast to assistance rendered during the 2019 Bushfires. In February 2022, a fatal shark attack of an ocean swimmer just outside Little Bay where the Branch is headquartered provided a reminder of the dangers in the ocean. In response there was a significant increase in drone operations along with the deployment of Drum Lines. Membership increased to 18,648, which is over the pre COVID level. Competitively four Sydney clubs were in the top ten at the Australian Titles with similar results at the State level. What ever the new year brings the Branch has demonstrated that it has the capability and agility to respond to changing aquatic emergency situations.
