Community Music Victoria

Community Music Victoria supports, promotes & champions participatory music-making. Get amongst it! We last reported on the calendar year of 2021. This report covers the period January to June 2022 and marks the move of our reporting from the calendar to the financial year, a change necessitated by a change in our funding arrangements with Creative Victoria. In the first half of 2022, CMVic s program included an increasing proportion of events held outside or in spacious venues to model COVID best practice. We also continued to provide accessible workshop and networking opportunities online to enable leaders and participants to participate from across the state and beyond. During this period there were 45 separate workshop and music making sessions offering a range of opportunities for community music development, attracting a total of approximately 1,070 participants. These included facilitated leaders forums and networking sessions, large scale community events, workshops to increase the skills of leaders, and participatory music making sessions to encourage people new to community music. Through these sessions, participants were able to develop their musical and leadership skills, and experience how such participation stimulates creativity and promotes social bonding within new communities.

**Community Music Victoria Inc.** (CMV) is a nonprofit organisation based in Victoria, Australia, focused on fostering participatory music experiences across the state. Established to support inclusive community music-making, CMV connects individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels with local music groups, ranging from choirs and drumming circles to brass bands and orchestras[1][2].

The organisation curates an annual program of workshops, events, and networking opportunities for music leaders and participants, emphasizing peer support and skill-sharing[1]. Its mission centers on ensuring access to collaborative music creation, regardless of ability or prior experience[4]. CMV collaborates with diverse musical communities, including the Dandenong Ranges Music Council Inc., which operates under a similar ethos of promoting music participation through ensembles like youth orchestras and community bands[2].

While **Music Victoria** serves as the peak body for contemporary music in the state, CMV distinguishes itself by prioritizing grassroots, all-genre inclusivity rather than a specific musical style[3]. The organisation’s activities align with broader cultural equity goals, advocating for music as a unifying force that bridges social and demographic divides[4].
