Staff at The Alfred’s ICU are wearing bright colours and bringing a plate of food to share, by way of marking this year's International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). Held on Saturday 17 May, IDAHOBIT raises awareness of the discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ people. It promotes inclusion, respect, and equity; regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. While progress has been made, Associate Nurse Unit Manager Penny said it is important to continue raising awareness of discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ people. “Progress is not permanent unless we actively protect it,” Penny said. “Equality benefits everyone, and raising awareness ensures that no one is left behind.” Clinical Nurse Specialist Brydie said when people feel seen, outcomes improve—both clinically and culturally. “It sets a standard of dignity that should be non-negotiable in healthcare.” (fb)

Trauma Consultant Dr Marian Biddle is likely one of the first people you’d encounter following a road accident and admission to The Alfred. “Treating people impacted by road trauma is a really big part of our work and we have organised systems and teams to meet that demand,” Dr Biddle said. “What has been concerning is the severity and immediate management that’s been required due to how critical these patients are lately." This year’s National Road Safety week happened to coincide with a spike in deaths on Victorian roads, leading doctors at the Alfred - including Dr Biddle - to remind people of their responsibility to those around them. “Death tolls and admission statistics aren’t just numbers, they represent human beings with fulfilling lives, relationships and families,” Dr Biddle said. “Treating everyone on the road, including passengers and other vehicles as you would treat a family member, will help keep everyone safe.
