Hawkesbury Herpetological Society Inc

Overview

The Hawkesbury Herpetological Society Inc. is a Australian nonprofit organisation dedicated to fostering an understanding and appreciation for reptiles and amphibians through education and conservation efforts. Based in New South Wales, the society plays a significant role in promoting the welfare and conservation of these animals.

Objectives and Activities

The society aims to promote conservation through education, supporting its members and the broader community in understanding the importance of habitat preservation, proper care techniques, and practical skills associated with keeping reptiles and amphibians. This is achieved through regular meetings and workshops that provide knowledge and skills essential for maintaining these creatures both in captivity and in their natural habitats.

Community Engagement and Outreach

The Hawkesbury Herpetological Society has been instrumental in changing public perceptions about reptiles and amphibians. It advocates for the conservation of native species and organises events that bring reptile enthusiasts and the general public together. One of its notable initiatives is an annual expo, which has grown in popularity and serves as a platform for educating the public about these animals.

History and Legacy

The society was founded with the vision of Jim Stopford and has evolved over the years, playing a crucial role in advocating for reptile and amphibian licensing in New South Wales. Its dedication to conservation and education has made it an integral part of the local community.

Logo and Emblem

The society's logo features the Broad-headed Snake (Hoplocephalus bungaroides) at its centre, a species once common in the Sydney basin but now listed as endangered in NSW. This emblem reflects the society's commitment to the preservation of local herpetological species. Surrounding the snake is a map of the Hawkesbury River system, symbolizing the society's connection to its namesake region.

Structure and Membership

As a small charity, the Hawkesbury Herpetological Society Inc. offers membership benefits that include educational support, mentorship, and resources for those interested in herpetology. It provides advice on obtaining necessary licenses for keeping reptiles and amphibians in captivity, aligning with its mission to ensure responsible and informed care of these animals.
